I used to use Media Server in Windows to watch movies/videos, pictures, or music from my computer on my TV or PlayStation, because Windows would act as a Media Server and I could watch videos on any device that was connected to the network. Now I am referring to Media Server and not Media Center. I used this in Windows Vista, Windows 8, and Windows 10 (Windows 10 up to about a week or two ago).

About a week or two ago for some reason my TV stopped connecting to my computer. I thought this was odd, I didn’t do anything to my computer that would have changed any setting to prevent this. I looked for a setting to adjust for the Media Server and I can’t find one. I looked on the Internet and found some articles saying that Windows 10 does not support Media Server anymore and you have to use alternate methods. The odd thing was, I have had Windows 10 for a long time now and have not had any issues with this, it was like Microsoft pushed something through to remove this feature. I do have the Professional edition of 10 and it is a genuine version.

I did download an application called PLEX. It was easy to install and configure and appears to be free, if you aren’t trying to stream your videos over the Internet, which I am not. I don’t like the fact that I still had to create an account with them just to use it. However, it does work.
File Server Setup
Can anyone please tell me if Microsoft did remove this feature from Windows 10, if not where do I now need to go to configure the Media Server? If they did remove it, this was a wonderful feature and I wish they would put it back. Why take away something that was great and now are forced to download some third party app? As mentioned PLEX does work well, but is there some other App that I can use that doesn’t require me to register, is free, and does what Windows Media Server does? I don’t want to have to utilize the Internet or register just to watch something on my TV from my computer.
